Once the spines are gone, a dried sea urchin shell shows its five part pattern clearly, with rows of tiny dots running from the top down to the base.

This one is pink and small enough to sit in a palm. Set it in a shallow dish with sand and driftwood, use it as a little holder for an air plant, or glue it into a shadow box or wreath. It is a light, natural shell, and it suits beach house shelves, bathroom decor and anyone who collects things from the shore. Each urchin is natural, so size, shade and pattern differ a little from one to the next.

About Sea Urchin Shells

The hard shell of a sea urchin is called a test, built from fused plates of calcium carbonate. Five narrow bands alternate with five wider ones, giving the fivefold symmetry that is easy to see in a dried test, and the small bumps on the plates are where the spines attached. The plates grow along with the animal, so urchins never molt.
