The strawberry top is a whole sea shell banded in pearly white and pink, winding from its point down to the opening.
Sized to sit in an open palm, it brings a bit of the beach to a bathroom shelf, a coastal bookcase or a glass jar of sand and souvenirs. Crafters use shells for wreaths, shadow boxes and table settings, and a single shell tucked into a card or gift bag makes a small, easy keepsake for someone who loves the ocean. Because these are natural shells, the banding and exact size differ a little from one to the next.
A sea shell is the hard outer layer made by a sea animal, most often a mollusk such as a snail, clam or oyster, which builds it through a tissue called the mantle. Marine mollusk shells are mostly calcium carbonate. Shells have been strung as beads since the Stone Age and used in pendants, buttons, mosaics, inlays and keepsakes.
