Both halves of a pink agate geode, cut and polished by hand in Brazil, make a matched bookend pair weighing about 9 to 12 pounds in total.
The weight holds a row of books upright on a shelf, desk or mantel, and the polished faces show swirling bands and crystal centers. Felt pads or bumpers are included to protect your furniture. It makes a striking gift for book lovers and new homes.
The pink color is dyed, so keep the bookends out of strong sunlight and wipe them with a dry cloth rather than washing them. Each geode is unique, so height, banding and color vary.
Agate is a banded form of microcrystalline quartz. Its bands form as silica-rich groundwater deposits layer after layer inside a rock cavity, and some of those cavities become crystal-lined geodes. Agate is slightly porous, so it takes dye well, which is how the vivid colored bookends in the trade are made.
