Bright pink agate geode bookends bring a cheerful pop to a desk, nightstand or nursery shelf. The two halves form a matching pair, and together they weigh 1 to 3 pounds.
This lighter size is made for journals, paperbacks and a few picture books rather than heavy hardcovers. The pink is dyed for a vivid color, while the agate bands and crystal pockets are unique to each pair. It makes a sweet gift for new babies, graduates, teachers and anyone who loves pink decor.
Agate is a translucent form of microcrystalline quartz. Its bands form as silica-rich groundwater deposits layer after layer inside a rock cavity, and some of those cavities become crystal-lined geodes. At Mohs 7, agate is hard enough to polish to a glassy face. Because agate is slightly porous, it takes dye well, which is how the vivid colored bookends in the trade are made.
