Dark lines and splashes across a pale background give this Picasso marble cabochon its painted look. The marquise shape measures about 25 to 30 millimeters by 18 to 21 millimeters.
Wire wrap it, glue it into a pendant bezel, or use it as a focal stone in a ring or bolo. Because every pattern is different, each cabochon makes a one of a kind piece.
Marble is softer than quartz and can etch with acids, so keep it away from perfume, vinegar and harsh cleaners. Pattern and color vary from stone to stone; the quarter photo shows the size.
Picasso marble is metamorphosed limestone from the Mineral Mountains of southwestern Utah. Heat and mineral-rich fluids fractured the limestone, and dark minerals such as graphite, hematite and iron oxides filled the cracks, creating its brushstroke pattern. It is also sold as Picasso jasper.
