Straight-shelled fossils of an ancient sea creature stand out in dark stone in this freeform orthoceras cabochon, a tiny piece of deep time.
Wire wrap it into a pendant, set it in a bezel, add it to a fossil collection or give it to a natural history fan. It is a conversation piece that pairs beautifully with silver, leather and earthy beads.
Each cabochon is rough cut and measures about 23 to 36 millimeters by 23 to 24 millimeters. The fossil pattern is different in every piece.
Orthoceras, whose name means straight horn, was an extinct nautiloid with a long, straight shell. Many decorative fossils sold as orthoceras are closely related straight-shelled orthoceratoids, part of an ancient lineage related to the modern nautilus.
