About Ammonites

Ammonites were coiled-shell marine cephalopods, more closely related to today's octopus, squid and cuttlefish than to the nautilus. Their shells were divided into chambers by walls with intricate suture patterns, which is what you see when one is split. They died out at the end of the Cretaceous, about 66 million years ago.
