Dogtooth calcite gets its name from crystals like these, sharp and pointed, and this specimen has them in deep yellow orange rising from a stone matrix.
This large specimen has big and small points across its surface and a polished shine that brings out its texture. It is a striking piece for a collector's cabinet, a study or a mantel, and a memorable gift for a mineral lover. This is the exact cluster pictured. Its warm color glows under a lamp or in afternoon light.
The cluster is about 7.75 inches long, 5.75 inches wide and 4.5 inches tall, and weighs about 2.77 kilograms. It is heavy enough to feel substantial, so give it a stable spot.
Dogtooth spar is calcite that forms sharp, pointed scalenohedral crystals, named for their resemblance to dog teeth. It grows in caves, veins, fractures and geodes. Calcite is soft, at 3 on the Mohs scale.
Stone Meaning: Calcite is traditionally associated with energy and clarity.
