A matching pair of purple agate geode bookends, sold as a matching pair. At 1 to 3 pounds for the pair, they are sized for desks, nightstands, short shelves and a few paperbacks or journals.
Each half has a polished face showing agate bands and crystal pockets. The purple color is dyed for a vivid look, while the banding and crystal formation are unique to each pair. They make a colorful gift for readers, students and teachers, and a lighter pair is easier to move and ship than large geode bookends.
Agate is a translucent form of microcrystalline quartz. Its bands form as silica-rich groundwater deposits layer after layer inside a rock cavity, and some of those cavities become crystal-lined geodes. At Mohs 7, agate is hard enough to polish to a glassy face. Because agate is slightly porous, it takes dye well, which is how the vivid colored bookends in the trade are made.
