Stair-stepped squares spiral inward on this bismuth crystal, and every surface flashes with rainbow shades of gold, pink, blue and green. It measures about 19 to 27 millimeters by 14 to 17 millimeters and feels surprisingly heavy for its size.
It is a fascinating desk piece, a fun piece for science-loving kids and adults, and a memorable gift for collectors of unusual minerals. The geometric shape looks almost man-made, and in fact most bismuth specimens are grown in a lab from melted bismuth, which lets these perfect hopper crystals form. Handle by the base to protect the delicate edges.
Bismuth is a metallic element, symbol Bi. It forms hopper crystals with stepped, hollow faces. The rainbow colors come from a very thin oxide layer that interferes with light. Most specimen crystals are laboratory grown.
