About Agate Geode Bookends

Agate is a translucent form of microcrystalline quartz. Its bands form as silica-rich groundwater deposits layer after layer inside a rock cavity, and some of those cavities become crystal-lined geodes. At Mohs 7, agate is hard enough to polish to a glassy face. Because agate is slightly porous, it takes dye well, which is how the vivid colored bookends in the trade are made.
