Mexican Onyx Large Crystal Cat Carving - One of a Kind, 19 Inch

A cat carved by hand from Mexican onyx brings warm banded stone and feline personality into one showpiece.

This crystal cat was hand carved by artisans in Mexico from Mexican onyx, and the close up photos show the carved face and details. The stone's natural banding runs through the body in brown tones, so the pattern follows the curves of the cat rather than sitting on top of it. At more than 19 inches tall and over 31 pounds, it is a true floor or console piece for an entryway, a living room, a reading nook or a lobby, and it reads clearly from across a room. Mexican onyx is a banded calcite, a softer stone than true onyx, which is why it carves into such smooth, flowing shapes. It makes a memorable gift for a cat lover or a housewarming. This is the exact cat shown.

The cat is about 19.25 inches tall, 10.75 inches wide and 8.25 inches thick, and weighs over 31 pounds, about 14 kilograms. Look at the ruler photo for scale.

About Mexican Onyx

Mexican onyx is banded calcite, sometimes called onyx marble, rather than true onyx, which is banded chalcedony. Its soft layered bands come from mineral deposits building up over time. Calcite is soft and reacts with acids, so keep it away from acidic cleaners and harder objects.

Stone Meaning: Onyx is traditionally associated with strength and self control.
