Deep royal blue, often flecked with golden pyrite, lapis lazuli has been prized for thousands of years. These chunky hexagons are cut, shaped and polished by hand, one at a time.
The six sided shape sits flat, so it works as a desk piece, a paperweight for small notes or a centerpiece in a crystal grid. Lapis is a classic gift for a writer, a reader or anyone drawn to deep blue, and the solid, palm sized feel makes it satisfying to hold. Because each hexagon is made by hand from natural stone, color and markings vary.
Each hexagon is about 1.5 by 1.75 to 1.625 by 1.825 inches and 17 to 22 millimeters thick. The ruler photo shows the scale.
Lapis lazuli is a blue metamorphic rock that has been used for thousands of years as a gem, carving material and pigment. Its blue comes from lazurite, and white calcite veins and golden pyrite flecks are common. Afghanistan is the leading source, and much commercial lapis is dyed or waxed to even out its color.
Stone Meaning: Lapis lazuli is traditionally associated with wisdom and truth.
