About Amethyst Geodes

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, colored by trace iron exposed to natural radiation. In Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, it forms in large geodes within volcanic rock, and many of the hollow agates of southern Brazil and Uruguay hold a crop of amethyst crystals inside. It is the modern birthstone for February.
