About Amethyst Stalactites
Amethyst stalactites form inside geodes in volcanic basalt and are well known from mines near Artigas, Uruguay. Slicing one shows banding of chalcedony and amethyst around the core, much like tree rings. Amethyst is quartz with a Mohs hardness of 7.
