About Selenite

Selenite is a crystalline variety of gypsum, hydrous calcium sulfate. It is very soft, 2 on the Mohs scale, and can be scratched with a fingernail. Water can dissolve and dull its surface, so it is best kept dry. Fibrous, silky gypsum sold as selenite is technically satin spar.
