Polishing does something rough rutilated quartz cannot: it opens a clear window onto the needles inside.

These freeforms were cut, shaped and polished by hand and selected in Brazil, so each has its own outline rather than a set shape. They are flat and pocketable, about 0.625 to 0.825 inches thick. Number 01 is about 2.25 by 2.125 inches, number 04 is the longest at about 3.375 by 2 inches, and number 03 is the broadest at about 2.75 by 2.5 inches. A freeform of this size works as a palm stone, a desk piece or a small display on a stand, and it is an easy gift for someone who already loves smoky quartz. You choose the exact piece from the photos.

About Rutilated Smoky Quartz

Smoky quartz is ordinary quartz darkened to brown or gray by natural radiation acting on trace aluminum, and Brazil supplies most of the smoky quartz on the market. When it also holds needles of rutile it is sold as rutilated smoky quartz. Tourmalinated quartz is a close relative, with black tourmaline needles in place of rutile.
