You get two minerals and two textures in one small piece here: purple amethyst points accented by soft, creamy calcite.
The contrast is what makes it fun to look at: glassy violet crystals set against soft, creamy calcite deposits that formed alongside them. At about 4 inches, it is an easy size for a desk, a shelf, a nightstand or a crystal collection, and it makes a more interesting gift than a plain amethyst chunk. It is a thoughtful choice for a February birthday, a coworker or a friend starting a collection. This is the exact formation shown.
The formation is about 4 by 3 inches. Look at the hand photo for scale.
About Amethyst with Calcite
Amethyst is purple quartz colored by trace iron and natural radiation. Calcite, calcium carbonate, often crystallizes later in the same geode pockets, leaving creamy white to golden crystals perched on the purple points. Calcite is much softer than quartz, 3 on the Mohs scale, so those areas deserve gentler handling.
Stone Meaning: Amethyst is traditionally associated with calm and balance.
