This one crystal brings together three quartz types: elestial layering, alligator etching and natural smoky color.
The faces are built up in stepped, recessed layers, the elestial growth, and the surface is etched into the rough, scaly texture collectors call alligator quartz, which varies from specimen to specimen. The color is natural smoky quartz, and the crystal is graded AAA. At nearly 11 inches tall and almost 8 inches thick it is a large, solid crystal with plenty to study from every angle; the photos include the back side and close ups of the front. It would sit well on a credenza, a pedestal or a large bookcase. This is the exact smoky quartz crystal shown.
Measured, it stands about 10.625 inches tall, 6.5 inches wide and 7.75 inches thick. Photos show it in hand and next to a ruler.
Elestial is a market name for skeletal quartz, which forms in unusually saturated conditions when crystal edges grow faster than the faces, leaving recessed, layered faces. Alligator quartz is a trade name for quartz whose surface has been naturally etched into a rough, scaly texture. Smoky quartz takes its brown color when natural radiation activates color centers around trace aluminum, and it is the national gemstone of Scotland, where it is called cairngorm.
Stone Meaning: Smoky quartz is traditionally associated with grounding and calm.
