Tilt this polished agate and you may see water move inside. Enhydro agates hold natural water trapped in a cavity, and this one is framed with an electroplated gold edge. It measures about 40 to 50 millimeters by 30 to 40 millimeters, not including the bail.
The amount of water varies: some show a small bubble, many hold more, and some are half full. It is easiest to see with a flashlight behind the stone. It makes a fascinating gift for science lovers and collectors, and a pendant people will ask about.
Enhydro agates are agate nodules or geodes with water trapped inside a cavity. As silica-rich water deposited layers, it enclosed a pocket of liquid. The chalcedony shell is very slightly permeable, so water can enter and leave extremely slowly, and because the cavity is not full, the water can often be seen or heard.
