For a mineral collector, a large zeolite plate is a chance to see crystals still sitting where they grew.
This specimen keeps its crystals on their natural matrix and spreads them across a plate about 8 by 6.5 inches, wide enough to fill a shelf or a display stand. Zeolite crystals form in cavities in basalt, the same setting that produces apophyllite and stilbite. Its flat, low profile at about 2 inches thick means it can rest on a stand or lie on a table without tipping, and at about 2.275 kilograms it has satisfying heft. Add it to a mineral cabinet, a geology display or a home office bookshelf. This is the exact zeolite specimen shown.
Size runs about 8 by 6.5 by 2 inches, and the weight is about 2.275 kilograms.
About Apophyllite and Zeolites
Zeolites are a group of more than 40 hydrated aluminum silicate minerals that most often grow in open cavities in basalt; stilbite is one of them. Apophyllite is a closely associated phyllosilicate with glassy to pearly crystals, about 4.5 to 5 on the Mohs scale. The Deccan Traps basalts of India are a prolific source of both, with pale green apophyllite and salmon pink stilbite found together near Mumbai and Pune.
Stone Meaning: Apophyllite is traditionally associated with spiritual growth and inner peace.
