About Amethyst Cave Geodes

Round amethyst geodes like this one are cut open on one face to show the crystal lining. These cavities begin as gas bubbles in basaltic lava; mineral rich fluids later seep in and grow quartz crystals on the walls, purple where trace iron and natural radiation have colored them. The largest amethyst geodes come from the Parana basalts of southern Brazil and neighboring Artigas, Uruguay, two of the world's biggest amethyst producing regions.
