You can see why collectors call this mineral grape agate the moment you look at the surface: rounded purple bubbles cover it from edge to edge.
This formation is broad and nearly square, giving it a wide display face that shows well from across a room. It works on a coffee table, in a glass cabinet or beside a lamp, where the spheres cast tiny shadows that emphasize their shape. Colors run mainly purple, sometimes with blue, white, green or gray grains. Choose it if you want a grape agate with presence but still small enough to pick up and turn over.
About Grape Agate
Despite the name, grape agate is chalcedony rather than agate, since it has no agate banding. Its rounded clusters are called botryoidal, from the Greek for a bunch of grapes, and its purple comes from trace iron. Colors range from deep purple to lavender, lilac and greenish blue.
Stone Meaning: Grape agate is traditionally associated with calm and confidence.
Good to Know
- Dust with a soft, dry brush; the spaces between the spheres collect dust faster than smooth stones.
