Black tourmaline paired with flaky, pearly mica gives this raw specimen two very different textures.

The tourmaline here formed right in the mica, so you see the crystals in their natural setting instead of loose. It is a solid, heavy piece with a good footprint, the kind that sits well on a bookshelf, by a front door or on an office desk. Black tourmaline is a classic first specimen and an October birthstone, so it works for a collector or a birthday.

About Black Tourmaline and Mica

Black tourmaline, the variety called schorl, is the most common tourmaline. It grows as long prismatic crystals, usually triangular in cross section with heavy vertical striations on the faces. Mica is a group of sheet silicate minerals that split into thin, flexible sheets with a pearly to metallic luster, and both minerals are common in granite and pegmatite.

Stone Meaning: Black tourmaline is traditionally associated with grounding and protection.
