A cut base is a section of an amethyst geode sawn flat underneath so the crystal side sits upright. Amethyst is purple quartz colored by trace iron exposed to natural radiation, and large amethyst geodes form inside volcanic rock in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and neighboring Artigas, Uruguay.
