Each freeform Mexican opal cabochon has its own shape and color, in shades of beige, brown, yellow, green and blue, and some show rainbow hues. They measure about 10 by 9 millimeters to 21 by 14 millimeters and are not drilled.
Set one in a bezel for a ring or pendant, wire wrap it, or add it to an opal collection. Smaller pieces suit stud earrings and dainty rings, while larger ones make a striking pendant focal.
Opal is softer and more brittle than most gems, rated 5 to 6, so protect it from knocks, heat and sudden temperature changes, and store it apart from harder stones. Each stone varies in size, shape and color.
About Mexican Opal
Opal is hydrous silica, a mineraloid with a Mohs hardness of 5 to 6. Fire opal has warm body colors from yellow to orange to red and usually lacks play of color; the most famous source is Queretaro, Mexico.
