Mexican onyx is cut into a faceted diamond shape, about 18 by 10 millimeters, that catches the light on every side. It is not drilled.

Set it in a bezel or prong setting, glue pairs onto ear posts, or add it to rings and pendants. Choose 1, 5 or 10; larger packs lower the price per stone, and a matched pair makes elegant drop earrings.

Mexican onyx is banded calcite, a softer stone than true onyx, so protect it from scratches and harsh cleaners. Each stone varies slightly in banding and shade. Because the facets are cut on a soft stone, settings with a protective rim, such as bezels or pendants, help it last longer than everyday rings.

About Mexican Onyx

Despite the name, Mexican onyx is banded calcite, also called onyx marble, rather than the chalcedony of true onyx. Calcite is softer, rated about 3 on the Mohs scale.
