Raw turquoise keeps the look of the vein it came from, with an uneven surface and natural color right on the outside.

These petite Apache turquoise pieces are sized for wire wrapping, a small cage pendant, a resin project or a starter mineral collection. A single piece also makes a thoughtful December birthstone gift. Each stone is natural, so shape, shade and any matrix differ from piece to piece.

About Turquoise

Turquoise is a hydrated copper aluminum phosphate. It forms when groundwater seeps through aluminum rich rock in the presence of copper, which is why it turns up in copper deposits in dry and desert regions, and its blue comes from that copper. Arizona leads US production by value, where it is usually recovered by hand as a byproduct of copper mining.

Stone Meaning: Turquoise is traditionally associated with wisdom and friendship.

Good to Know

  • Much commercial turquoise is stabilized with resin or dyed, and treated material should always be disclosed.
  • Dyed howlite and magnesite are the most common turquoise imitations, so buying identified rough from a known seller helps.
  • Turquoise can show thin veins of darker host rock, called spiderweb matrix; it is part of the stone, not a flaw.

Additional Details

  • Stock photo; yours will be similar.
  • One rough stone, about 14-27 mm x 11-17 mm.
  • Sold as natural rough; turquoise is porous, so keep it away from oils, lotions and soaking.
