This specimen tells two stories: one side is a twinned calcite formation, and the other is white palygorskite with black romanechite highlights.

It comes from the Palmarejo Mine in Chihuahua, Mexico, a gold and silver operation, and a recorded mine locality adds to its interest as a specimen. Twinning happens when two crystals of the same mineral grow together in a fixed, symmetrical orientation, and here that growth makes a striking calcite form that changes as you walk around it. The contrast on the other side, with white palygorskite and dark romanechite, means the piece has no single front, so it suits an open display cabinet, a library shelf or a lit niche where both faces can be seen. At over 10 inches and about 4.8 kilograms, it is a substantial anchor for a mineral collection. This is the exact specimen shown.

The specimen is about 10.25 by 7.25 by 7.5 inches tall and weighs about 4.8 kilograms (10 pounds 8 ounces).

About Twinned Calcite, Palygorskite and Romanechite

Calcite is calcium carbonate, 3 on the Mohs scale, and it commonly forms twinned crystals that share a twin plane. Palygorskite, also called attapulgite, is a fibrous magnesium aluminum clay mineral that can form mats called mountain leather. Romanechite is a black hydrous barium manganese oxide named after Romaneche, France, and it grows as crusts and rounded masses rather than separate crystals.

Stone Meaning: Calcite is traditionally associated with balance and clarity.

Additional Details

  • You receive the exact calcite, palygorskite and romanechite specimen shown.
  • About 10.25" x 7.25" x 7.5" T; about 4.827kg (10 lb 8 oz).
  • Locality: Palmarejo Mine, Chihuahua, Mexico.
  • Calcite scratches easily and the palygorskite is soft and fibrous; handle by the base and wash your hands after handling.
  • Heavy; lift with two hands from the base, not by the crystal edges.
  • Photos show the actual piece.
