About Amethyst and Jasper

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, colored by trace iron exposed to natural radiation, and it is the modern birthstone for February. Jasper is an opaque, fine grained variety of silica whose red and brown tones come from iron. In Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and neighboring Artigas, Uruguay, amethyst forms in large geodes within volcanic rock.
