About Amethyst Stalactites and Calcite

Amethyst is purple quartz colored by trace iron and natural radiation. Amethyst stalactites form inside geodes in volcanic basalt and are well known from mines near Artigas, Uruguay; sliced, they show bands of chalcedony and amethyst around the core. Calcite, calcium carbonate, often crystallizes later in the same pockets and is much softer than quartz, 3 on the Mohs scale.
