About Uruguayan Amethyst

Artigas in northern Uruguay and the neighboring Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul are among the largest amethyst producers in the world. There the amethyst grows as a crop of crystals inside hollow, agate lined cavities in volcanic rock. Amethyst itself is purple quartz, colored by trace iron exposed to natural radiation, and it is hard and durable.
