About Amethyst Stalactites and Calcite

Amethyst is purple quartz colored by trace iron and natural radiation. Stalactites form as mineral rich water drips and deposits layer after layer, and amethyst stalactites form inside geodes in volcanic basalt, well known from mines near Artigas, Uruguay. Calcite, calcium carbonate, often crystallizes later in the same pockets; it is soft, 3 on the Mohs scale.
