The fern patterns inside dendritic opal are not fossils, even though they often get mistaken for them.

They are mineral dendrites, branching growths left when water rich in manganese moved through the stone, and in these tumbled stones they show as black, fern shaped markings in common opal, the kind without play of color. Both stones are polished to a smooth shine and fill the palm of your hand, which makes them easy to carry, hold while reading or keep on a desk. Stone 1 is about 3 by 1.625 inches and the slimmer of the two; stone 2 is about 3 by 2 inches and a bit broader. They make a thoughtful small gift for a nature lover or anyone who enjoys plant shapes in stone. You choose the exact piece from the photos.

Each numbered option is pictured on its own, so the piece you see is the piece you receive. Both stones are about 3 inches long and 1.25 inches thick.

About Dendritic Opal

Opal is hydrous silicon dioxide, a mineraloid that is softer and more brittle than many other gemstones, at 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale. Dendritic opal is common opal with mineral dendrites, branching growths that form when manganese and iron rich water moves through fractures and deposits manganese oxides. Dendrites are often mistaken for fossils and are called pseudofossils.

Stone Meaning: Dendritic opal is traditionally associated with growth and clarity.
